Active monitoring is when the program performs some checks by sending controlling requests and expecting a response. It's the most popular type of monitoring being used for monitoring services, availability, and performance.
NetCrunch supports over 70 network protocols that can be checked in seconds' interval. We call them intelligent pings as they are validating the response, not just checking if the port is open or not.
SNMP protocol is mature, easy to implement and lightweight. It's been used for monitoring networking hardware and also industrial hardware. Thanks to hardware gateway you can connect to network anything using SNMP nowadays.
NetCrunch contains various target specific monitors called sensors. You can consider them as scripts running checks using a particular protocol, and then processing response. NetCrunch allows creating custom sensors with external scripts. Although NetCrunch uses a proprietary protocol to parse script output, it's easy to use any script and create data parsers with NetCrunch.
Passive monitoring is based more on listening and observing symptoms, without interfering with the devices. This type of monitoring causes less traffic and is often used in IoT and automation world. Instead of doing check we can listen for events containing alarms, state or performance data.
The sensor is a listener for a REST API request from the agent located on the network. NetCrunch can receive data about a single node or multiple nodes in a single request. The data format can be parsed by NetCrunch using defined data parser, so it can be as easy as using curl and sending data to NetCrunch.

NetCrunch can act as a log server for external event sources. It stores them in the NetCrunch Event Log database and performs defined alert actions (i.e. notifications) in response to alerts.
NetCrunch triggers alerts upon performance data (Performance Triggers) and state of various objects such as connection, node, service, sensor, etc.
The NetCrunch file sensor can monitor text log files and can be used to monitor Linux files using FTP/s or HTTP/s, Windows/SMB and SSH/Bash.
The sensor can process logs remotely without downloading them (Windows/SMB and SSH). NetCrunch provides parsers for common log formats out-of-the-box and allows you to write your own parsing expressions using various methods (regexp, Javascript).
